Tutorial on Finding Your California State Unclaimed Property
Once you're on the California State Controller's Office page you'll have the option to search for unclaimed money for an individual, business, or you can enter a property ID number if you know it. Don't worry if you don't know your property ID number because you will find out your number later.
For an individual search enter your last name. Your first name, middle initial, and city where you have lived are optional but useful for narrowing the search. Click "search" once you enter the information.
It will then return results of individuals with the same name that are owed unclaimed property. Find your name which matches an address that you have lived at in the past and click on the ID number If there is no ID number next to your name but only says "details" that means that a business or institution has reported unclaimed property in your name but that they are in the process of transferring the unclaimed property.
After clicking your ID number it will take you to a page displaying your information and the money or property that is owed to you. At this point write down your property ID number and if possible print off that page for your personal records.
From here you have two choices in filling out your information for your claim. The first is you enter information into fillable fields and then print out the form with your information on it. The second option is useful if you don't have access to a printer to print off the claim form. It involves calling the California State Controller's Office to request a claim form sent to you in the mail. The forms then must be signed. Unsigned claim forms will be returned and you will be delayed in receiving your money. There are also documents asked for to prove ownership that they ask copies of are sent with the claim form.

The State Controller's Office warns that it could take up to 180 days for your claim to be processed due to the large number of claims. Once a claim is submitted you can check the status of your California state unclaimed property claim here. To check the status of your claim you need to enter your SS# or Tax ID or your FEIN which is Federal Employee Identification Number.
